Empty 200Gal - suggestions?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you are into discus, why not. I would lose the pleco though, or get one that is a carnivore. They are also more delicate than the other two choices.

I would think running a planted 200+ would cost a bit.

I'm into discus as much as the other 2. It's one of the rare times I will have a totally free tank to be able to put in it what I want. So I want to have the most varied info possible.
In terms of the Oscar and arowana, these should be fish I have for the next 10 years right? I want a healthy fish that won't make me go through this again soon!
For the oscars, you said to get many young ones and hope some pair up, but then as adult I could only keep that pair in the 200 right, getting rid of the others?
For the arowana, they are all mostly imported from Asia right? Do they then require a lot more maintenance and water changes? Will the 200 be enough as it ages and grows?

Which have most personality for those of you who have had them all?
I am used to koi fish and goldfish that are both very puppy-dog like. I do like a smart fish also. That's what is making me doubt discus, they look a bit 'empty eyed' to me!

I think there is a good chance you can have 2 pairs in that tank, but that is up to the fish in question.

Aggression wise, oscars are not too bad.

Aro I am talking about is the Australian ones. Your tank is a tad small for the more peaceful but larger growing silver and black ones from SA.

Oh I see, I don't like the coloring on the australian ones that much.
Might go with the oscars. How many adult oscars can be in a 200Gal happily? I would really like a pleco. It was never compatible with my previous fish. So I would finally like to have one.

The only drawback I see w/ discus would be the water changes. If you buy adults, water changes wouldn't be as big of a deal vs. buying juvies, but you're still looking at 2-3 50% water changes a week. They would look great in that setup though.

my tank is about 2meters long by 60cm width and hight.

it would be locally german bred discus. not the wild ones.

As I said, probably 2 pairs. You can add a school of tough dithers like tinfoil barbs or red hook silver dollars and a pleco if you like. If you have the money, I would get a larger, carnivorous one like a sunshine. You'll have to clean algae yourself but its not as dirty as a common pleco.

I have 3 Oscars in my 180 gallon with no issues I wouldn't see a problem with adding 2 more to my tank. I would say 5 would be okay. in my honest opinion.
