Long story sorry, skip to ** for my questions.

So after moving I had a disaster and lost all the fish I had in one of my tanks. Needless to say I was very ticked and quite cranky for the next few days. Anyways now I've realised it's a chance to change things up a bit. Now I don't have any monster tanks yet since I don't have funding or room but I currently have a totally vacant 46 gal to fill and a 33 gal with 7 guppies in it.

I was looking at my 46 and wondering out loud what to stock it with and the gf demands w/e I put in there is colourful. I'm not too conserned on what she thinks since it's my tank and I'll do what I want with it. Basically if she can tell there's fish in it she'll be happy.

Sorry this is getting long winded. anyway....

For the 46 I was planning for it to be planted so I'm thnking of making it my display tank basically I guess. So here's kind of what I'm thinking.

**Maybe some polyps in my 46 with a schol of tiger barbs maybe? Definetly want the polyps but I want to know if the tiber barbs will cause it any problems. I figured tiger barbs would keep the gf happy since they're so active. And I like the oddness of the polyps. Then I was thinking some silver dollars in my 33 with the guppies? I might be able to give the guppies to a friend of mine. I also was thinking of replacing my red-tailed shark and putting one in here with the dollars. Other than over-stocking does anyone see any problems I might run into?

Oh and I was also wondering about cichlids. I know there's tons but I have no experience with them and was thinking if anyone knows good ones they could suggests that would keep my gf happy and work in my situation that would be great thanks.

Sorry again about the long post. Thanks.

are you talking about polypterus?
if so, my bf keeps his with barbs, the only problem was a small one that he got a hold of once, but he doesn't bother the others.

i have a poly with my small cichlids [yellow labs, red zebras].

you can do a poly with tiger barbs, or a few bright cichlids. they're all active, and i'm sure the bright yellows and oranges would make your gf happy. plus they're not too hard to keep

That's kind of what I was thinking. I figured any cichlids would be quite active and all that I have seen are quite colorful. I just wasnt' sure if they could be kept with barbs. I thought the might be since they're fast but ya. Thanks for your input.

you can definitely keep the barbs with them, they are fast and can hold their own.

good luck! post pics when you've decided and got em set up!

I was also thinking rams maybe. But I don't know much about them? Anyone have some experience there?

haha, sorry i'm all over your thread. i have two blue rams. they're gorgeous, and only a little sensitive. i keep them in water about the mid 70's, they aren't aggressive really and can be kept with community type fish, but not large cichlids etc. i would recommend them.

or you could do a few kribensis, lots of color, and small so you could get a few. only problem in they get a bit aggressive during breeding

haha, sorry i'm all over your thread.

No, no don't be sorry. If you've got first hand experience with what I'm asking then you're just who I need to talk to. Thanks btw.

So would the Rams still be good with polypterus' and tiger barbs?

Or what about keyholes? They looked quite nice at the lfs store today. They stay relatively small right? like 4ish" I mean. I'm only thinking small so that I can have higher numbers so there's a higher chance of seeing the fish being active.

Oh ya, and all these fish are fine with either plastic of live plants right? My long term plan was to convert all my plastic to live but keyword there's longterm.

Thanks so much for your help so far Bethany.
