Ive had my endi for about a year know he is about 14 inches, when I got him he had the nice black markings. Over time thes have faded until he is almost enitrly a uniform grey. He lives on krill, sinking carnivore pellets, and the occasional frog. My water quality is perfect at this point with a ph just over 7. Anyone have any input or ideas on how to put the bars back on him?

from what i have known, fishes colors tend to be brightest when they are young as they grow older it fades out a bit, if the bars are faded too much find out what stress your bigger, mine gets brighter when its feeding time :grinyes:

Hi everybody..... I'm unsure if we're talking about "endi endi" or "endi congicus". My 13" endi still retains her contrasting bars, but my 13" congicus has lost almost all hers! Which are we comparing?

I was actually asking ALASKAJAMMIN to be more specific as to which endi he had! So maybe I could make a more intelligent addition to the conversation!

I'm not sure about this species, but in many types of fish they will lose color over time if the lighting in the tank is very dim. For example, in goldfish and koi to get those really nice blacks and reds the fish needs to get direct sunlight or it will fade. I wonder if it is similar to getting a tan?

Well I think it is a congicus which might explain why he faded. He shouldn't be stressed about much, has a large hiding space and I keep things pretty clean. But my lighting is a tad dim and my gravel is "natural" mixed colors. hmmmm well mabye ill look for a endi endi

The colour of endi endi can be enhanced using red quartz base + black background...
Using black sand base will darken the endi's body...thus the stripes may not be outstanding enough...

some people says genes play a part in the pattern of the stripes...If you ask me, I have seen people ordered endi endi from japan with solid pattern of stripes.

For congcius, the stripes will fade over time as it grow up...But won't totally disappear, just more and more un-obvious...

Assuming there's no stressed situation or illness, don't worry, the color will be back as it grow further. Yes, the baby bichirs do have great color. However, the color fades during the fast growing stage, and the color will develope better and better after the growth rate is remarkably slow down.
