Can someone tell me how I can figure out how much it cost to keep my tanks running per month...the in-laws wont shut up about it :irked:

on the equipment it should tell you what it draws then its just a simple matter of converting it and then you can multiple it times what your power company charges.

(hours per day * days per month * watts) / 1000 * kilowatt-hour fee

- the kilowatt hour charge will be on your bill. i just use $0.10 as a baseline
- if watts are not known, use amps * volts = watts

:)

for example, lets say you have a pump that draws 150w and is on 24/7. it will cost you about $11 per month to run...

(24*31*150) / 1000*$0.10 = $11.16

is there any kind of meter i can plug just that **** into?

kinda like the meter outside your house but on a smaller scale like a powerstrip with a read out?

I went thru the same thing so I pull out the electric bill to get the calculations per watts. I was able to cut down power use by using warm water for waterchange instead of cold water from the hose. This way the heater doesn't have to work as hard. In the summer months the electric bill is cheap. In the winter months, the electric bill double cuz I use an electric heater and over 500watts of heater in the tank running to keep the water at a constant temperature.

How big is your tank?

You may think it's a good idea to use warm water, but it's NOT! :grinno: Think about the corrosive and all kind of unknown chemical, debris inside of your water heater tank that could be harmful and toxic to your fish. :screwy:

That's why I don't own 1K fish.:D Wait, I need to make a correction. It's 1K plus another zero. You're a baller!!!:headbang2 Dude if the water is good enough for us to shower then it's good enough for fish with filtration. Don't be paranoid like me!:grinno:
