i want to buy a 75 gallon but my parents wont let me because of energy costs how much does it cost to heat the tank? I currently have a 300 watt heater and I heard that is good for anywhere from 2-5 gallons per watt.

can someone give me an estimate cost

thanks :)

if not ill end up with a 55 gal

it currently costs me about 50 dollars a month to have 2 55 gallons and a 150 gallon operational, one of the 55's has 2 penguin 75 gallon filters on it, and the other two have 200 gallon tank canister filters on them, they all have heat and air going, but i guess it depends on where you live? (btw, i know it sounds ridiculous, im told that all the time by friends, they tell me there could be something wrong with my electricity meter, but thats not something im gonna call and report juuuust yet) :P

hmmm I guess i have to work and give them money for the elecrtricity. I live in NJ
lol dont report it I had free cable for 2 years once cause the company forgot to turn it off it was awesome until it whent away one day and I had no tv :(

so I guess if your meter wasnt rigged I would have to pay around 10 dollars a month

What about the water bill? Our price of water is going up and they are going to add meters to us. I think the water might be what cost more in the end.

great way to place another limitation on tank size but i doubt that will happen in nj its been raining almost every day cause its so hot and humid climate feels tropical.

The heater is what will use the most electric.
How much it runs dictates how much electric it will use.
If your house is cold it will run a lot.
Let your parents know the heater only runs for a short time, it's not continuous like a filter.

Me personally, I have a wood stove. My house is 80 all winter long, the heaters don't run much. Now if I could convince my GF to not turn the AC below 78 they wouldn't have to at all.

I've got 6 tanks up and running. My total electric bill is about $60 including everything keeping my 1100 sq ft place running.

I keep it a cool 70* in here as well

don't focus on cost so much as power consumption. in some areas like were the tenessee valley authority is power is ridiculous my summer bills are normally over 400.00 a month with ac in florida pool and lost of laundry for kids.

filters will have written on them what the power consumption is. if you can get away with it sponge filters on air pumps use alot less power but I have no idea what you plan to keep.

heaters run more, but on my tanks with carefully cut back splashes they do not run as much. my open top tank runs the heater more then my big tanks.

Washington state power is cheap. I pay about $25 a month and i have a 75 and a 40, place stays in the mid 60's without heating the apt. tanks are kept around 75.

if you can find out how much you pay per kilowatt hour, its easy to figure out how much it will cost in terms of hydro. the math is just multiplication. find out and tell us and we can easily figure it out. you just need the wattage of each peice of equipment.

around here, we pay $0.057 per kilowatt so its quite cheap to run setups.

chances are, for one 75g tank, you won't even notice it on your bill. might be a few dollars per month, thats it.

when bills are high, people are quick to blame the fish tank, when in reality its the heating/cooling costs of the house, running the washer dryer etc.
