energy costs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would say a 300w heater in a 75 would be fine. I only have one 300w in my 120 and have no difficulty keeping it warm.

If you're already using a 300w heater, I'm sure you won't notice the energy consumption.

My water bill is only 35 dollars a month, thats with 2 water changes (each tank) a week and a shower for me everyday (i dont like to stink) :P plus brushing my teeth twice a day and washing dishes, etc

chances are, for one 75g tank, you won't even notice it on your bill. might be a few dollars per month, thats it.

just noticed that you are deciding on either a 55 vs a 75 based on energy costs.

don't.

you won't notice a difference at all. a few gallons of water more per week water change is imperceptible on your water bill and the hydro costs will be the same (the difference will not be noticable)

get the 75..

This... ^^^

And keep in mind the power bill will go up the next couple months on it's own basically. It will get hotter out so the A/C will run more and more - racking that power bill up. So if you do setup the tank and the bill goes up - don't let them blame the tank.

yup. the cost to run the tank drops off in the summer. the only thing that draws any power is the heater and it runs very little in the warm months.

remember: an Aquaclear 110 uses only 12 watts of power.

running constantly in my area, at $0.057 per kw hour, it costs:

(0.012kw)*$0.057*24h*30d per month = $0.49 per month to run, or about 50 cents.

50 cents. for a whole month of filtering..

its the heaters that use the power. most of your other stuff is too small to notice on your bill (unless you have a reef tank with high wattage metal halide lighting..)

your best bet is to find out how much your electricity costs per kilowatt hour, post it,

calculate the costs based on the wattage of your equipment, and go to your parents with a real number.

because until you show them the math and how little it actually costs per month to run a tank, they might not believe you..

I save $ by insulating my big tank downstairs and keeping tight lids on all my tanks. I see the lights come on every now and then, but most of the random times I look for them, they're off. You can tape styrofoam to the back and sides of the tank, even paint it black to look nice.

well we dont really use ac maybe three days a year so it would be the fish tank... and my fish tank would be in the basement which is rather cool my current 37 gallon is kept at 80 I like to keep my jd nice and warm he likes it. most of the time the heater isnt even running. in nj its apparently 15.83 cents per kilowatt hour say the heater runs half the day nmy heater has 300 wats that means it will cost only 4.74 cents an hour. that would translate to 56.98 cents a day and in turn 17.09 dollars a months and in turn 205.128 dollars a year.

how many watts would I need to heat a 75 gallon aquarium

15.83 cents per kilowatt hour is pretty expensive compared to a lot of areas.

however, even then, your heater will only run probably 2-3 hours total per day even in winter. its cycles on and off, if you were to add the totat time during the day it is actually on it would probably be just a few hours even in winter.

once the tank is at temp. it doesn't cycle 'on' very much to keep it up there.

so, in reality your heater, if it was running 3 hours per day in the 'on' position is probably costing you about:

.3 kw * $.1583*3h*30d = $4.27 per month.

so your 75 is probably going to cost 6 or $7 per month to run.

if your parents think your fishtank is adding tons of money to the monthly bill, they are mistaken. its very little even with higher energy costs these days.

its the reef tanks or people with 10 setups that rack up the bills.

not one 75g tank.

hope this helps!
