From the amount of bio and lack of mechanical filtration - you are using your bio media to do some the mechanical portions. I am all about flow, I love it, but I concentrate efforts on mech first then bio, so you rarely have to clean the bio media and disturb the colony.
Why not use the power of the cannisters to do the mech filtration then put in a more efficient wet/dry or FBF filter for the bio.
With the flow rates of the cannisters you don't get as much filtration per single pass of water. You need at least a little dwell time so the bacteria can process the nitrites and ammonia.

With more mechanical, and being frequently cleaned you will reduce your ammonia production, which means less nitrites, which leads to lower nitrate levels.
