Is it ok to use epsom salt in a Tanganyikan tank? No particular reason for it...just heard it helps a bit for stress.

Chris

I use Epsom's as a laxative for fish....It can be added with no harm, but I would stick to good ol' aquarium salt. Or rift lake specific salt.

HAHA. Ok i'll skip on the epsom salt. I gotta find that 50 pound bag of marine salt.

Chris

No chris, not marine salt, aquarium salt. Aquarium salt is more of a medication type thing, while marine salt will just increase the salinity of your tank.

Got it. I read somewhere on this forum that "aquarium salt" can be purchased under a generic name at the grocery store. Is this true?

Why would you waste a few bucks over salt? If your fish are doing fine, then you don't need to add salt.

yes, the less additives the better.
kosher salt will work.

I think i just paid $5 for a quart size container the other day for api aquarium salt for freshwater aquariums. I would not use anything from a grocery store, but that me.

Chris,
You can use regular Table salt but get the one with NO iodine.
Epsom salt is used as a laxative and Baking Soda used to raise PH.
I don't mess with the epsom salt or baking soda unless its necessary.

The iodine issue is not much of an issue contrary to popular belief. The better issue here is why waste your time and money if your fish are fine? Cichlids certainly do not need any salt in their tank at all unless you count the mineral salts with buffers if your tapwater is soft.
