The iodine issue is not much of an issue contrary to popular belief. The better issue here is why waste your time and money if your fish are fine? Cichlids certainly do not need any salt in their tank at all unless you count the mineral salts with buffers if your tapwater is soft.

I agree, I only use the salt when I need to medicate the fish. Other wise I don't use any salt. But table salt is cheaper to buy than the ones at the LFS.

I agree with everything mentioned as far as not needing it unless necessary. I've been out of the game for a while, and I never really frequented forums for any fish info ever. I've never used any salt in my tanks before, but I read and it seems that people were adding it to their tanks. I figured there was a purpose. If it has no additional benefits, then I won't use it. My fish are doing fine.

If your fish have wounds or external problems then regular table salt without iodine is the stuff to use.
It's cheap and it's the same stuff they sell in the LFS for 4 times the amount.
Epsom salt is a laxative used to clean out your fishes insides.

I don't recommend using either unless necessary.
