There is an excellent sticky on this forum called longest-lasting equipment. I tought it could be interesting and useful to do the opposit and create a list of equipment one should never get : tanks, heaters, filters, filter medias, meds, food ...

Algaefix, Hurricane overflows, CPR overflows, Tenecor aquariums, Tronic heaters...that's all I can think of off hand. I'm sure there are more.

I've had nothing but problems with Aquaclear powerheads. Granted I've only owned two but both have eventually quit on me after roughly six months. I can usually take them apart and put them back together and get a little more life out of them but they always fail again. I've heard nothing but good things about them but for me anyways they've just never worked out.

Quick side note: To be fair I run them on timers which I've heard can burn out the motors. So to clarify if your looking to use an Aquaclear powerhead with a timer I would look to invest in something that's built for that kind of use. I honestly don't know how much of a factor running them on a timer plays and I have no experience running them 24/7 so I can't comment on that.

I'm not a fan of any filters that use cartridge-type media . . . I prefer canister and HOBs that allow you to customize your media . . .

biowheel filters, worthless

WATER Clarifier's , biowheels, cartridge type HOB's etc

lol nice topic...i'd say plastic suction cups in general...plastic wears out and becomes hard and the suction is lost....Magnetic suction cups like the ones made by zoomedics...much longer lasting.

Marineland stealth heaters peices of ****. mine leaked stray current into the tank since the day i got them didn't replace them because i didn't realise until recently that what i was feeling was electric current.

ANY co2 system (DIY works perefectly fine and even that is hardly nessicary in most planted tanks)

Any HOB that uses cartridges, IMO not a total waste but not worth it. i just put a peice of foam over the intake of my bio wheel HOB and let that act as my mech. filtration.
