Equivalent amount of safe to prime?

Thanks for the response, RD. I do remember that sticky but thought it might be helpful for the OP and others to understand that knowing what the average levels of disinfection strengths that are in their water supply will dictate the correct dosage of dechlor product to use.

After a bit of research yesterday, I see that the Hach CN-70 disc style water test kit is one brand that is often used in the reef hobby to determine the Total and Free Chlorine in the water sample. They also offer the dip strip test kit at less cost.

I certainly agree with that, Dee. The more one knows about their local water supply, the better for them, and their fish.

Another thing that folks should keep in mind, especially those who are dosing without knowing exactly what their local water supply requires, is that Prime/Safe contain hydrosulphide salts which is a reducing agent that reacts with chlorine compounds, which are oxidising agents.

If there is no chlorine compounds left in the aquarium water, it will find something else to reduce such as oxygen. This becomes even more important in tanks with higher temps (and lower O2 levels), which is why Seachem states: If temperature is > 30 C (86 F) cut dosing in half.

Both Prime & Safe are oxygen scavengers and both will consume O2 if/when excess is used in an aquarium.
