Erythrinus possible tank mates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would go for a pair of WC mokes or WC palmas complex, one or 2 would do fine. I keep my ery ery in a 70 with a 13 inch ropefish, 7 1/2 inch ornate bichir, 6 1/2 inch palmas beutt., and soon to be 3 more bichirs (Black Volta endli, palmas palmas, palmas polli). Some nipping happens but the bichirs are tough enough for it. I would go to JA and snag a moke or palmas as it will take a long time before a senegal can be big enough to not be killed by the wolf, unless you can find a large one

it's a 40 breeders so any WC bichirs aren't really the best options since they grow to 10 inches+.

Erys can be kept with bichirs that are the same size with each other. 4 inch senegals can be regularly found in most LPS. Drew, how big is that wolf?

If you do birchir make sure it's bigger then the wolf's mouth.

Mokes aren't known to reach over 10 inch, at least in my research. Even a 4 inch ery would and could eat a 3-4 inch sen. Don't underestimate what they will go after, I feed mine 3 whole huge nightcrawlers every 2-3 days and he still ends up stealing some of the bichirs worms. Mine at 4 inches ate a dojo loach that was the same length, and they're pretty similar in width to bichir

A do agree you in most parts but even a few 8 inch senegals would be pushing it in a 40 gallon tank with the wolf. The aggressiveness of the wolffish is a hit and miss. Some are docile while some are overly aggressive.

yes, never estimate a wolfish. My 5 incher managed to eat my 3 inch black aro. But the thing is, bichirs are quite scaly and thick fish (compared to the dojo loach) so the wolf won't likely eat the bichirs.
The wolf will not eat the bichirs if they are the same size or even a slight smaller.

The biggest worry is not with the wolf eating the bichir but with the possible aggressive nature of the wolf. Wolves tend to like to nip the fins of slow tankmates. I've kept bichirs with red wolves on several occasions. It worked out fine except for some minor tussles with ended up with torn fins. Nothing permanent.

Wolves are indeed greedy eater. I ended up selling my wolf not because of his aggressiveness but because of it outcompeting the food of my bichirs and even my armatus. not sure if all wolves are a glutton like mine.

I would give it a go and start out with a senegal or 2. no expensive fish at first. Best to start off the combo when the fish are small.

Oh yeah the fins and scales are a bit tougher and it may be slightly wider but probably not by much, OOOF an ery eating a blacky?!! Thats terrible man, sorry to hear that.

What I've found w/ my ery is the more active something is the more likely it will be targeted by the wolf. My ery (whose name is bloody face from american horror story) NEVER nipped my Ornate, because he's not a very active bichir. When I added a 6 inch Beuttokoferri bichir, and that guy swims around a lot, he grabbed a lot of the attention of the wolf and got nipped a couple times. Nothing huge just torn fins. So I went and picked up a 10 inch rope fish and that is now the target of the wolfs curiosity, he's more active then the beutt and has shorter fins so its pretty hard for the ery to grab hold of. Since adding the rope my ery has a habit of piling with the beutt lol.

Mine has lived w/ bichir since I got him. For a while all I had was an Ornate bichir and then I introduced the Ery and so far has been a great wet pet. I just need to figure out a perm home for him since I'm sick of his gluttony and am taking a second shot at ATF, that thing would set off the wolfs curiosity like dropping in a fish with its tail cut off lol.

Back on topic, best tank mates for wolves are tough and armored and not very active. If your interested in catfish at all spotted Raphael and striped Raphael would fit in that tank for life and have a nice, prehistoric look to em, along with a very thick skin and hooks on the sides.

I think that's their personality. My wolf is greedy as F$&@! I would hate to put an other fish with him cause they would have to be strong eaters.
