what are some of the methods you guys have been using to escape proof your tanks? I've got a couple of ropefish on hold at the lfs and I wanna make sure my tank is escape proof before I pick them up. I was also wondering...I noticed while oogling at the pair in the lfs, that the smaller one bit onto the other ones 'feeler' on his nose...and I'm almost certain it tore it off(I couldn't be certain because the victim went and hid after wards) Is this normal behaviour? I was planning on getting them together but would it be a good idea?

1. Identify possible Escape routes 2. Cover them 3. Ensure the bichirs can't knock over them. I think thats about it

Heavy glass tops on the tanks, cut the plastic trim to accomadate heaters/filters. Also use pieces of egg crate to make sure no escape gaps exist. just be sure to cut the egg crate larger than it needs to be and that it is weighted down.

good luck, wise to take this seriously. many of us have learned this lesson the hard way!!

Inspect entire top area. If you think there is the slightest possibility they could get out in a spot, there's about a 95% chance they CAN. Block it and any holes half that size. Don't forget the fact that they are basically one long muscle, the little beggars are strong. If you don't think it's heavy enough, glue it, tape it, clip it, weigh it down with a big rock, just secure it.
Also, keep in mind that these measures will only prevent casual escape attempts. If your poly really wants to go walkabout, he'll wait for that ONE day you forget to secure the lid after feeding.

yeah i had mine jump out of the tank the other day but all you need to do is have some glass cut to fit the uncovered parts.

I have heavy glass lids on my bichir tank. I have HOB filters, so to cover the gaps I have some books weighted down with a few bags of pellets. I also lowered the water level. In another thread, I read that lowering the water level helps polys settle in more bc they won't have to struggle to get to the surface to get air and makes it harder to jump out.

I blocked the gaps where the filter pipes go into the tank with plastic.
Also, the water level is a few cm below the top of the tank.

Hopefully this should be enough to keep my Ropes from escaping.
So far - so good!
