I have recently bought one of these which was simply labelled Texas Cichlid at the shop and after doing some research believe that mine is most likely an escondido am I right in thinking this? Also it is about 4 inches can any one tell the gender by this picture? ThanksView attachment 958911

It's a Green Texas/Carpintis. Vontehillo, Escondido, Chariel can't be verified and can only be speculated if you don't know where he was collected. It's possible that his parents were collected from a couple different spots and he's a mix. Regardless he's a very nice looking Carpintis.

Agree with MTBjake, the names chairel, escondido, etc are locations/lagoons, and unless you are an expert on each, it would be very hard to distinguish.
And...there can easily be variations of color, striations in any population of any lagoon, even within the same spawn.
I have chairel, and the pics are of the same individual at different times in its life

Being in Australia I'd guess not. You guys don't get much at all in the way of imports.

Exactly what I was thinking ..........

Thanks for all the replies guys.
It doesn't really bother me as to what exact species it is as this is one of the best looking fish I have ever owned and also has one of the best personalities also.
Is it too early to tell the gender do you think? also duanes in those pictures what size is your texas at each stage? I am guessing yours is a male?

great looking fish either way.i think i see some black in the dorsal fin, which sometimes means its a female.body shape also makes me guess F.

The male in the first pic is about 6", second pic 4", and 3rd maybe just under 3".
I agree yours could be a female with the dark spot in the dorsal, and rather torpedo shaped profile, although it may be too early to tell.
They are not really Texas cichlids, as they come from further south in Mexico, but that's neither here nor there.
Here's a shot when they were under 2", the alpha male was pretty obvious.

The female in breeding color below
