i bought these texas cichlids about 2 months ago from oddball express in the uk ,they were sold as escondido cichlids the biggest is about 3.5"
i've seen other pictures of escondido and they seem to have more colour on the scales, what do you think.

also in the last pic if you look closely at the dorsal fin you can see some blotches, which some of the fish also have on the pectoral fins ,i can't tell if it's a fungus of some kind or it's just normal, it's worse on some fish but they all have at least some marks on there fins.

sorry about the poor pics, they don't stay still for long :)

Carpintis

@davew, yours look like my 'carpintis' Escondido as well. I have seen other pics on the internet that claim to be 'escondido' as well but the spangles look bigger. Here's a video of mine spawning at 5 months of age from Youtube. Someone commented that my fish looked like 'cyanoguttatus' (Texas) in their breeding dress. Mine are definitely H. carpintis Escondido F1's

i'm a bit disappointed if they are not escondido as i had to search quite a bit to find them, i have had my doubts as i have seen pictures of them with much bigger pearling but have also seen pictures with smaller pearling, i spoke to oddball express and he said they were bred from stock supplied by jeff rapps.

Here's Escondido at about the same size...I think...of the fish you posted...4" Any slight difference in color here can be due to the photograph. Yours is photo'd on white...mine on brown gravel.

Don't mistake the adult fish for what it looks like at a very small size. If in fact the dealer DID get them from Jeff as Escondido...it's Escondido. With all of these carpinte variants the two ways you can be assured you are getting what you pay for is dipping it out of the wild yourself...or reliable provenance. Jeff is a reliable source. I can't speak to Oddball Express. With the exception of a few Carpinte, I don't know how anyone can nail down the variant at that size.
