this is something I felt everybody on this site should see and be aware of. Mods please make an acception this time or find a way to copy the content from the page and sticky it here. This is a very bad practice used in our hobby that needs to be stopped. Being one of the biggest aquarium forums on the internet we should really have something stickied on this already to keep unknowing hobbyists from being mislead.

thats a great thread and i agree, all of these practices are disgusting

I don't understand the tattooing, because it doesn't even look good. All of it looks like it was done by a shaky four-year-old (no offense to shaky four-year-olds). Honestly, the fact that there is even a market for these fish is evidence of just how warped people have become. It's very, very sad.

We can make a difference. Let your LFS's know how you feel about them stocking these. Some of them might not even be aware of the processes.
a lot of the time they are aware, but they believe whatever sells, sells. like at my store, we all know the processes these fish undergo, but when somebody specifically requests blueberry oscars, painted skirt tetras, painted glassfish, etc. there's really no way to say no in the retail business. in my experience, people tend to not actually care if the fish itself will last, but if it will look nice in their house. its disappointing really. especially because when i tell them about the processes undergone by these fish, i try to make it sound as horrifying and cruel as possible. about 50% of the people i tell, still buy them anyway, and some just decide to buy them somewhere else. its just how things seem to go, no matter how hard i try, retail is retail. :(

If I worked there I'd straight up tell my customer he's a douche bag if he requested a blueberry oscar. Then I'd tell him why he's such a douche.

And you most likely wouldn't have a job anymore. I mean, I understand that this is a cruel and disgusting practice, but it doesn't help the fish if you're out of work. The LFS will just hire someone else, probably pay them less than they paid you, and that person will sell blueberry oscars to his or her heart's content.

I can't believe that the mag. which is showing people how to do all these discusting procedures is called Fish Love. I agree with justonemoretank, the tattooing looks horrible. I'm not sure why anyone would want to do these things to their fish in the first place. They look so beautiful just the way god made them!
