I believe he was using a human situation to represent the principal that not giving up on life is an important principal in and of itself…
thanks, yes i wasnt try to compare the values. since as i said dont feel bad for killing a fish, people kill billions. more so realize it was really you dads decision, and most people like to be present at the end of there pets life.

it was try to make a point that even tho a animal may look pitiful doesnt necessarily mean its in its best interest to put it down. as the animal has the desire to keep living probably even more so then a human. usually people dont put down animals for the sake of the animal(perhaps in some rare circumstances, where the pain that is coming is gonna be excruiating.) people put down animals for there own sake rather its from emotional or financial turmoil that comes from allowing or helping the animal live, the owner will expierence in the future. i dont want people tricking themselves in every circumstance and say its the best for the animal.

Well how on earth did you put him down?
As far as who's life is more valuable I say it depends on which 'human' you're talking about & who's fish. I can think of quite a few 'humans' who really don't deserve the life God gave them.

He didn't even asked me when he saw his fish. I just found it in a trash can near the kitchen after eating some snack.

that tells me you cared more about the fish then he did . . . I'd say you did the right thing.

and absolutely do not buy him a new one . . .

Yep, I bought him 2 baby aro since his 1st one died after putting the tank outside w/o any heater after countless time that I told him that he needs one since it's cold at night and that is really stressful esp for the baby aro. 1 of the aro that I gave him jumped and the last one succumb to the disease. I'll just tell him to watch my jar in my tank if he wants to see an aro :)

The ethical delima isn't so much in that you put the fish down, but in whether or not you are honest with your father. I hope I'm not assuming too much, but from your description of later finding the fish in the trash, it sounds like after you killed the fish, you left it in the tank without saying anything. Whether or not putting the fish down was right or wrong is an issue you and your father can work out.... Not being truthful with your father is wrong.

My dad's baby arowana was suffering from fin rot and ich for almost 3 weeks. I was the one who's always water changing, giving meds, feeding his aro since it got sick and I did everything I could to save it.

Why did you not seek advice here on MFK? Three weeks of the right treatment and the aro should be cured.

Normally i'd agree, but he mentioned the aro was in an outside tank with no heater. The temperature fluctuation alone is enough to kill off tropical fish, and I just can't see a diseased fish making it in these conditions (particularly since one of the best ways to treat ich is with increased temperatures).

I read the threads here in MFK and follow their advice. My dad doesn't seem bothered by the death of his aro and he's having fun feeding his kois right now.

Edit:
Yep he doesn't want to use any heaters "because it is summer!". Don't get me wrong I explained to him everything, but he's the dad, I'm the son, and that's his tank.

No, he stated the first one died from being outside. Then he bought two more:screwy: why I really don't understand. The second one jumped and the third died from a curable disease on which no advice was asked.

Not sure what advice the op is following so he claims:(
