ethics conflict with fishkeeping

I love my fish but I wouldnt think twice about eating a fish I caught so I cant see a problem with keeping it as long as the tank was big enough

think about how many fish we keep come from the wild anyways, its no big deal. the only problem was putting it in your tank and then releasing it again, that could possibly introduce "stuff" from your tank into the lake/rivers eco-system.

i can't believe i'm getting sucked into this, again. above mentioned, is 100% and agreed.

would you rather live in the street never knowing when you'll next have a meal or when someone bigger than you is going to come by and kill you.
or in a small apartment eating everyday (maybe, depending on feeding sched.) and never working for a meal?
ethics do come into play at some point, but untimately the responsibility lies with the individual.

huh? where did you get that idea from? a large portion of the fish in our hobby comes directly from the wild, and the other ones have just been taken from the wild and bred in captivity, for better or worse

Apart from domesticated pets (ie some dog and cat species) I dont think keeping any animals is ethically justified. Some domesticated species would willingly choose to live in captivity but all other animals have not. So what we can logically deduce from this is that all aquarium fish keeping is unethical. The real problem is that emotion and logic do not need to have any connection. The logical answer to your question is YES - fishkeeping is unethical but so are many other things. Eating meat for example. A more important question is whether you can JUSTIFY fishkeeping to yourself... and if you cant then perhaps you shouldnt keep fish.

If you want some philosophcal fodder; Do you think humans domesticated dogs or did dogs manipulate humans into caring and line breeding and providing for them?

Yeah, seriously...agreed. We definitely should not come off as moral police and judge others, to each their own I guess. Some people feel fine eating fish, and some are against keeping fish. Some say its ok keeping dogs, although I think it is far worse as they are bred, domesticated and often neglected at the end, to roam our streets and get hit by cars. Much of this has to do with our upbringing, how we were taught. Just like the gentleman above thinks that taking fish from the to keep is not ethical.

The way i see it no matter how good our intentions we are basically just another predator to the fish we keep the fact we are keeping them alive for a period of time is immaterial to the fish, either way eaten or taken and kept in a tank it isn`t going to see the wild again under normal circumstances.
Most fish die at a young age in the wild the constant running the gauntlet day by day avoiding predators is a fact of life, in many many cases if a fish lives only a month or two in captivity it is going to be longer than it enjoyed in the wild.
Many of the wild caught fish we see in our shops are the slow and dim witted specemins of their group thats why they get caught , caught by fish pred fish or caught by benign- pred- human doesn`t make a lot of difference to the ` victim`
