I have a beloved red oscar Ive kept for about 5 years, but he has recently developed a terrible case of HLLE. He still eats and acts normal, but he looks just horrible. Ive treated with Metronidazole two different times with no results. Have tried to improve water quality, nothing.

It seems to get worse by the week. I fear he will soon have perforated gills. I feel that I need to euthanize him, hard as it may be. Does anyone have a preferred euthanasia method for a large fish?

thanks

Oh, by the way, I didnt euthanize those tinfoil barbs in my avatar, I bought them at a chinese market.

Put them in water with some clove oil in it, this will put them to sleep. Then add a small bottle of vodka, but take a swig of it for your oscar, then pour it in like you would pour a little out for a fallen homie...... This will kill it.

Have you exhausted all possibilities to heal him? Hospital tank, meds, daily w/c. Just asking because I have a small one in bad shape that is a rescue and I'm doing everything I can to save him. At what point is it hopeless?

keep trying to heal seriously n point putting it down........................................ come off it, if hes looking hapy then there is no point. you said not acting strange just looks different.

The O sounds ok to me. If you had him for 5 years you wouldnt just say oh well hes over with. Youd try anything and everything to save him.

Right, well I feel that I have tried everything. If he were stable, I wouldnt worry, but he gets worse and worse. I guess as long as he doesnt "look" like he is in too much discomfort, I will wait, but Im not sure how well I can judge that. A little less judgmental would be good, guys.

Have you checked for stray voltage in the tank? Even a milivolt or so can really stress out a fish. You could also try a different diet too. HLLE / HITH issues I had in the past were related to one or both.

I agree with the clove oil, we use that in low concentrations for collection of live lab specimens and in larger concentrations will kill a fish.

Hope you can fix him up.

Cheers
