  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, thanks to you guys, I have decided to redouble my efforts and try to save ol red oscar. He still looks like hell, but I have moved him into my bedroom in his own tank where i can watch him better, give him more water changes, and keep better track of his diet. Ill try to let you know how he does.

That's good to hear man. Good luck.

I've heard that the best way is as stated above in another reply. put him in a bag of water from the tank and then put in the freezer. Their cold blooded and will just fall asleep quickly. the next day you have a solid block of ice. Easy to handle.
I've had to do this myself years ago, under the advice of a reputable fish breeder. It's not a pleasant thing to have to do, but sometimes you just have to man up, and take control of a bad situation before it gets worse.

If you would eat a fish literally disolving from parasites, be my guest.

Well' Ive tried more of everything, and he continues to dissolve. Two rounds of metronidazone, a new tank, very frequent water changes, and a plant-based diet as suggested. Now his nostrils are disintegrating, and the holes in his head are big enough to put marbles in. I feel badly because I know this is my fault, but at this point, what else can I do.

A fish farming website suggested carbon dioxide in the form of alka seltzer. Ill let you know in a few minutes how it goes.

Thanks for your efforts to help.

Heat oil to 350 degrees. Follow with with a little pepper and butter.

OK Guys, I did it. 10 tablets of Alka Seltzer in a bucket with the fish and about 2 gallons of water. He showed no distress, didnt fuss at all, his movements just kind of stopped peacefully at exactly one minute after dropping in the tablets. The website said to wait 10 minutes after last gill movements to be sure. It seems to me to have been a humane and peaceful death. RIP

i had to euthanise my blue acara, i hit it against a piece of slate:(, my only regret was i didnt do it sooner because it suffered quite abit:(

Sorry to hear about Ol' Red. I had to euthanize my daughter's favorite fish not long ago, a 7.5" pleco after my african's had ripped his eyes out. Poor guy. I used the freezer & a huge plastic bag. CO2 makes a lot of sense though & likely is more comfortable for the fish... Again, sorry man...

Bummer what a sad story, I'm sure the end was fast and painless.
Steve
