he didn't make it. he stopped eating the last few days so i put him down. I know, who thought an oscar would stop eating.
I used the clove oil method, they had 100% clove oil at gnc. Moved him to a ten gallon and he freaked out for a second and than he was fine. Added clove oil and he was asleep within five minutes, gills still moving but maybe once every five seconds. Added some extra just to make sure. Then added the vodka and he was gone within two minutes. Checked for gill movement for 30 minutes, and nothing.
All in all peaceful, no thrashing, no messy head chopping, just asleep and gone.
thank you to everyone for their input and thank you to the admins for this great community.
clove oil is the best method, for the fishes wellbeing, i have found up to now. i know how effective it is after this weekend. i had to destroy my whole stock because the parasite treatment failed and i couldnt get the other stuff as the one i needed is discontinued and they were slowly wasting away. so i did the responsible thing and gently euthanised my whole stock using clove oil. although its gentle on the fish and they quietly slip into unconciousness before the lethal dose is administered i will warn anyone who uses this method that it is not easy to watch your prized pets slip into oblivion even if you know its the right thing to stop suffering. good for them, in a gruesome sort of way, but slow and painful for the keeper.
having to watch it for 20-30 mins to ensure death is the most harrowing thing i have ever had to do with regards to my hobby and it even made me consider whether or not to continue in the hobby.
sorry if it felt like i was going on but i felt anyone who has never used clove oil should know that its very hard to watch its use as it is a time consuming method.
