You ever get the urge to go a totally different direction with your tank but afraid you'll regret it later on? I have a 5x2x2 with several clown loaches that I've had for many years. I've grown attached, yet have the urge to try something different. Another set up is not an option. I've had several different thoughts including growing out a tigrinus (knowing it would have to be rehomed later on), to even thinking about trying saltwater for the first time. Just wondering if other people have been in this position and what you'd do..

Yeah I've been through that so many times. Started with Africans for awhile then switched to saltwater to SA back to Africans to monster fish back to Africans now it's my school of tiger barbs with geos plus catfish. Yesterday I was at my Lfs and I was so tempted to switch it up again for a black devil catfish they had at 3" but I know it won't work with my current stock so I left empty handed.

I acquired 3 frontosa, a mated pair of yellow labs the other day. I brought them home and put the in a 75 gallon that has PFS. I have already decided to completely revamp their tank. I am going black sand, new lighting, and something new for the back of the tank which I have not decided yet. Actually, the black sand has already been delivered to my house. There is also the chance that I am going to move them over to a custom 110 tall I have since one of my lizards died I can move my ball python over to a 55 which frees up the 110. So, to answer your question: Yeah, I get the urge. The only reason it isn't done yet is that it is going to take most of a day. And since I just began my Masters program and am swamped with school stuff.

My issue is I have the urge to try something completely different, but am also attached to my clown loach shoal. I've tried swapping out mid/top swimmers to try to fulfill the urge of trying something different. But the thoughts are still there. It would take me the better part of a decade to grow out clowns to replace the shoal I have now and I fear I could regret getting rid of them. But I also like to continue to learn and grow in the hobby. I've never done saltwater, or a planted tank, or....

I've sustained some accidents over the years to forced me to start over. Had the large tig, dat, clown loach community. Problem is that I am attracted to fish that for some reason grow very slow...such as clown loaches, plecos etc. Just feels like there is little progress or change...stagnant without much accomplishment. And I only have one tank. But my morays are growing nicely.

My advice, keep the loaches, they age like fine wine. Get another tank to experiment with.

I get the urge almost weekly however I view my fish as pets and not a hobby so unless a fish is in danger I keep them for life. I'm down to 3 tanks and that is more than enough for me at this point in my life so when I find a new direction I try to find fish that will work both in my current and future and slowly transition over the years. Currently my main tank has clown loaches, we, sa cichlids and datnoids but I'm tempted to go back to a simple geophagus tank.

I understand. I had surgery this winter that led me to give away my beloved jags. But I have new fish now, vieja and Texas, and am re-invigorated. But I still wonder if I should have bought different ones!! I move every 4 years or so, so I get to try new setups every time. I can't wait to stop moving and get a long term/forever house to get to grow some fish to real maturity. I bet I'll go through what you are going through.
