Ever hear of mom eating her pups?

Woke up this morn to find one healthy pup sitting in the corner, and mom chewing on another pup... When i got to them it was too late

I could have swore she was holding at least 4 pups so im wondering how many she ate...

Anyone ever see their females eat her pups?
 
Sorry about your loss. I've heard of males eating pups but not females.

Was this her first litter?

Was she by herself or with other rays?
 
This was her 3rd litter and yes she was in my 450 w 4 or 5 other rays

Not sure wht her deal is....

I dont own any bds... U must be thinking of someone else ...
 
That's terrible. I'd understand more if it was one of your other rays but that does seem odd it was mom. Are you sure the ray was born alive?
 
Do you know if the eaten pup/pups were stillborn or alive. Ive heard of other animals eating their dead newborns so I would think that is a reasonal posibility. I remember when I was a kid and we raised many different types of animals one of them breeding and raising rabbits for food. Every once in a while we would get a female breeder that would eat the newborns. If they did it more than once we would stop using her because they just weren't good mothers. Into the cooking pot she went.:) Just food for thought. Sometimes it can happen if it becomes persistent then you may have to be even more vigilant than you already are for her births, if that is possible.:( If it happens with mammals then I assume its possible with fish.
 
I wonder if she ate any stillborns, then got carried away and started on a healthy pup...

Or maybe a male bit the pup, then the mom smelled fresh meat
 
Is it possable a male killed them and she then began eating the dead pups ??
