Ever hear of mom eating her pups?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Maybe she just was chewing on left overs from a male that killed the pup/pups.

It happens once in awhile, I have never seen one fully eat the entire pup they will chew it up and make a mess with it but I am pretty sure not eat the whole thing.

Happens again then maybe we just need to look into designing a pup trap. Model it after the lil live bearer traps you can get for guppies, mollies, and such. Pups are born and fall through a floor mom can't....

Hi Trev, had a leo mother take a bite at one of her pups before just after she gave birth to it,but she never ate it..pic attached..it survived for a day then died...

Sorry to hear about yours:(

Thanks for the replies guys. Maybe it was just the 2 pups then and she just decided to kill one

Sorry to hear this Trev.
I'm waiting for pups at the moment, the Marbles have huge pups 5.5" disc but the Pearl pups are very small, its a worry,i had a pup killed last time though i think it was the male, needless to say he is now behind a divider. This time i have scattered some drift wood on the bottom to provide refuge,i'm hoping this will be enough till i can get them out,you can't be with them 24-7 can you.

majority of female animals I've seen/heard/ experianced that practiced infanticide across the animal kingdom board generally something stressed the females out during or just after birth. is it possible someone was harassing her? and sorry for your loss, it always disturbs me when things like that happen with my pets.

Had it happen at least twice. Lost a total of four pups. They are generally born at night so, it is tough to tell how many I could have lost over the years.

Was the mother under stress? Sometimes animals eat their pups when they see them in danger. They think: i eat them and get the nutrition before any predator gets them.

Just had a pup eatin by another female tankmate yesterday , I wasn't sure she was pregnant. I have 2 f 1 male. I will separate the girls after seein that now . Is this common for other rays to eat newborns?
