Ever realize your fish are a lot bigger than you thought they were?

I don't even own a net for my fish, but they are always in the same tank so I never have a reason to catch them.

I did make a brave attempt to get updated weights & measurements of my goldies recently, but only managed with the biggest brute in my tank as she flicked her massive tail just once & the mess of water was incredible, so cleaning the mess took precedence over the sizes of the other fish lol

She was 7.25 inches from head to base of peduncle (that's right before the finnage) and 365 grams; she's 8.5 yrs old, so she's had some grow time :)

Just imagine, many people still think goldfish only belong in little bowls :irked:

I just want to clarify because I think some people might misunderstand what I did... I was trying to move one of my growouts to the big tank, that's why I netted him. He looked big enough to transfer by eyeballing. Since he was out anyway, I saw nothing wrong with measuring him.

The shocker for me was when he got into the big tank, I saw just how big my large fish were; they were much bigger than I thought they were or expected them to be. :)

I don't normally net my fish to measure, I only pulled out the one little tatf. The tatf is the only fish I pulled out tonight.

Your previous post was pretty clear about what you were doing (the moving), so anyone who can't understand that can go suck a lemon ;)

Agreed ^^ maybe not the lemon part lol but since you were netting the fish anyway to move it, I would have done the same thing out of curiosity, maybe weight to if you have a proper scale.

Im one of those who measure infront of the glass too... Mainly coz you shouldnt ever let a puffer gulp air...

But i do agree, from infront of the glass fish do look slightly smaller...

My polleni i thought was 12" or so, but when he died and i measures him he was pushing 15"+

Sucking on a lemon is great for a sore throat though! :p lol

I was flabbergasted when I realized that my 5" tatf was LESS than half the size of my goliath who I figured was 8", 9 at the most. Its amazing to me how small fish in a small tank can look big compared to big fish in a big tank... but I doubt that makes any sense at all.

Fish are usually bigger than what they look like when they are in the tank. That is why it is best to take them out and measure them.

I dont know but how crazy do we all look holding up a ruler or measuring tape to the tank glass moving around like were playing on a Ouija board.

There are some fish that by eyeballing i feel they arent growing but then i imagine them back in their grow out tank or the bag they were brought home in and i realize that they have grown.
