ever seen a fish break the glass??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its not a pistol shrimp whoever said that its a mantis shrimp. pistol shrimp are small and are nice they share burrows with some kinds of gobies on the other hand you CAN NOT keep a mantis in a glass tank only acrylic they have a club like arm to smash crustaceans they break glass all they time.

never witnessed it but i've seen the after math Big aggressive cichlids+ cheap tank with thin glass can = busted tank

fish like Dovii, trimacs , big midas are capible of doing this if the tank doesn't have thick glass

Wrong... They do not get big enough to break glass tanks.. This is an urban legend and no actual proof of a mantis breaking a tank exists.

I have kept fully grown mantis shrimp (7-8") in glass tanks and never even seen them strike the glass let alone break it.

About 15 years ago I was at a long since out of business lfs. They had a 8+ inch snakehead in a 29 gallon. I watched a child tap the glass on the far end of the tank (despite a note on the tank stating not to do so). The snakehead rammed the side and a crack formed in the glass. It was a star type crack and did not go the entire way through. A few days later the snakehead was in a 55. The owner said the crack had spread and he was sure it would soon break.

i gave a friend a 14 inch pacu and it broke through his 300g. he was hardheaded but lerned a lesson!

Out of my tini wini experience I've learned that, fishes cant be taught any lessons!
I saw my friend punishing his salvini by keeping it out of water for a minute for eating his characins:nilly::ROFL:

Sorry out of subject....

i was talking about my friend. I got the pacu from a lady in MS and i told him about it. He repeatedly asked if he could have it and i told him it needs a bigger/thicker tank and he wouldnt listen. it broke 3of 5 lids, knocked in a light strip then finally went through the side.

A mantis shrimp can break the glass on any glass tank but not acrylic...they must be kept in acrylic for this reason.

Peacocks are popular with aquarists for their bright colors and active behavior, but are definitely not reef safe, as they will eat most other tank occupants. Additionally, large specimens are capable of breaking very thick aquarium glass. It is for these reasons that they are often kept as solitary creatures in acrylic tanks.
Though they are burrowers in the wild, these animals will readily accept a suitably sized length of PVC pipe as a surrogate lair.
They are active, intelligent, curious animals, capable of interacting with their keepers.
