Heatrocks can short circuit just like any other electronic device. Either they go out completely or can heat up. Most reptiles can't really feel heat fluctuations as well as we can. So if the rock heats up they can get their insides cooked. When I first kept lizards I used heat rocks but have since then used under the tank heaters. I'd rather not take the chance of them being cooked. And besides, heat pads aren't that expensive.

Yes, I agree. Plus I don't want to limit him to only siting on the rock for heat, ya know? I also have a heat lamp aswell. So the rock isn't the only heat source.

Yes the Leopard gecko i have had his tail burnt off from a heat rock that his previous owner had in his tank. Apparently they arnt good at telling heat fluctuations on their tummies so they just sit there and cook. Fortunately my little one only burnt her tail and it healed up nicely, but i doubt it will ever grow back as if it had broken off.

hmm i have considered switchin to those, i probably will now. does anyone know if there is a problem with using them on plastic tanks? i have a 20 with a plastic bottom.. also for my boxturtle will he feel the heat through the 3or4inches of bark?

I don't know, something just makes me a little nervous when using a heat pad on plastic. Plus they are said to be recommended for glass tanks only.

I've used heat pads on Sterilite cages. As long as you have some ventilation underneath the cage, you should be good. Just make sure you've got a good probe thermometer at least. You can also get a Zoo-med thermostat for about $30.
