Everyone. Power outage here!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fish can go several days without food and no issues.

What do the tanks have on them for filtration? If its canisters one of the issues is the crud and build up inside of a canister can become noxious. Especially if its been a while since they have been cleaned. When the power comes back on they dump all that back into a tank and can do some serious damage. Is there some containers you could get. 5 gallon buckets or other stuff and go get water from somewhere else? Definitly make sure you get some occasionsal water movement at the surface. You can also dose with Safe or Prime to help keep toxic effects of Ammonia and Nitrite down. remove any of the loaded up mechanical filtration material and it may be best to actually take any of your Bio media and put it directly in the tank.

Finally someone who knows something lol

I wish people would stop saying he's screwed. You're obviously uneducated on what to do during a power outage. Read what I wrote, it will help you all in the future. I had to do this for 5 days when I had no power after storm Sandy. Didn't lose a single fish in 3 tanks

After the hurricane before sandy hit the year before I learned my lesson. That's why I always keep a pump and batteries handy. I had no power for two weeks. But I will definitely keep what you said in mind next storm

I was so worried and felt helpless at times. My biggest worry was the temp of the tank. I had done basically 100% waterchange in all the tanks the night before and didn't feed the day before just in case. I got lucky though. Temp had dropped to the mid 60's at one point so I wrapped the tanks in big blankets and hopes for the best. Needless to say, I spent about $10000 and had a generator installed now lol

I felt the same way. I was in the middle of a water change when the power cut off. I was lucky that the tank was upstairs so the room stood warm enough to keep the tank at low 70s but after the first two days the fish started dropping like flies. Back then I didn't know about MFK but I wish I did.

They'll be fine. As said above, just swirl the water every once in a while to exchange some oxygen. The only time you might have an issue with no power is if your tank is heavily overstocked or you have some very large fish that need lots of oxygen.

I think its fine as long you make some water movement to add oxygen. The problem is the filter. Alot of ammonia will build up into it because there is no oxygen left inside. When power comes back your filter will spill that into the tank. you should clean it before power comes back.

Walmart should be open. Go to the fishing section, they should have aerators for live bait. Buy those maybe they have a battery operated pump of some kind? Good Luck

Its not Ammonia that will build up in the filter. What happens due to the lack of oxygen and circulation inside the filter (If its a canister type) is the Benififcial bacteria actually die off things go from Aerobic bacteria to anerobic bacteria, especially if the filters got a lot of waste build up inside it. The out put of the filter if this was to be left sealed up for say 5 hours or more (could be 12 hours in the case of the OP) is going to dump heavy amounts of noxius/posionous gasses into the tank( methane gas and Carbon dioxide). This is why cleaning out the mechanical media in a canister filter is important.

Now the Ammonia build up will be happening inside the actual tank. This is due to no circulation through filtration and as the fish make wase or breathe they create Ammonia in their water. This is where actually putting the bio media in the tank may help with that as well as keep the bio media alive if you can get some water movement in it about every 30 minutes for 5 or 10 minutes at a time. Also using the Prime should help bind the Ammonia and make it safer for the fish.

depending on what your ambient temps are you may need to cover or wrap your tank. You may not need to.
