Nice cichlids! Are those Mexican tetras?
Thanks!
Nope they are astyanax bimculatus. Very closely related. They are found in Panama, Costa Rica and nearly all of SA except far south. One way to tell the difference is the spot by the gills. They are often called “two spot astyanax” as a common name.
These guys are pretty old. Think I’ve had them for around 10 years. Very hardy fish which can handle a wide range of temps and Ph. They are very nippy like Mexican tetras as they will feed on the scales of other fish if not fed well. Most of the fin damage on the cichlids is because of them. That being said, you have to keep an eye on them, because they can get aggressive.

Yeah, those guys can be pretty rough and tumble. I had one years ago I kept with mbuna
Only 1? Did you start out w/ more? I ask because they can kill each other off. My largest female was nearly killed by the others. She somehow survived this hole in her side ?I had 6 but 2 where killed by the others, not cichlids.
Another question-did it chase the cichlids?
