I emptied my 1100G pond on Sunday. For the nine exCichlasoma beani in the pond, 'summer camp' was over. It looks as if there are five males and four females. They thrived in the four months they were out there, the males now ranging from 7 to 9", the females 5 to 6". No sooner had I moved them into their winter quarters, one of the males took up with a female. She began to show vertical barring on the sides, a blackening chest area, and a black patch on the anterior part of her dorsal. For the last few hours they have been courting, flaring, swimming together, tail slapping and staking out a territory. Here are a few pictures of the 'beani' couple (soon to be parents, I hope).

Wow Jim there beautiful!!! If they spawn please let me know as I would love to buy fry from you.

They look great. I'm surprised the paratilapia can hang with them. Never had good luck mixing mexican cichlids and them.

Thanks. Will do.

looking great
polini in background is a beast aswell
what kind temps do you have in your pond over summer months

I love my 'polleni'. He's the male of a breeding trio I have. The pond's temperature in early June is usually in the high 60s to low 70s. I usually put the fish out when the the water temperature hits around 65, since I know from that point on, it will be climbing. In the full heat of mid-summer, the temperatures have reached the mid 80s (and even higher on occasion), but from the end of August on, it's a continual slide to 'oblivion'. This year I pulled the fish earlier than usual, when the water temperature hit the low to mid 60s. I figured I wouldn't tempt fate and risk losing my 'beani' or GTs.

Looks like love to me.
Amazing what a little vacation can do.

It works for fish...it works for people:naughty:

Thanks, and yes, I was a little surprised as well how they seem to be getting along. Time will tell on that one.

Amazing pair. Congrats!

Thanks everyone. I hope this state of affairs lasts. With cichlids, you never really know what tomorrow holds.
