I'm puzzled about this fish of mine. Of the original six, I have only one left, losing the others through "an unfortunate set of circumstances". It is now about 18 months old and at 5-6". It displays the colors in the photos constantly, but when younger, the bars were not as prominent. It is a very shy, almost reclusive fish, and was originally purchased as a WC 'ornatum'. But having checked other threads, it really doesn't look much like the so-called ornatums pictured, in that those do not have distinct vertical barring and have orange red colors in the fins, especially the tail. Could the barring in mine be a stress pattern? And the lack of orange pigments a 'location' issue? There are three pics of mine and then a picture from a thread on the ACA forum (DRE's fish) Can anyone tell me if it is the same species as Dre's and if it is a male or female? Thanks.

My fish were three quarters of inch when I got them about four years ago. They grew VERY slowly and at three years three of them were slightly larger than the other four, but they all looked the same. In the last year the largest three really put on size getting to the 11-12 inch range. Three of the others are all about 6 inches and is about 8 inches. The three largest started coloring up with a lot of red in the tail find and blueven on the body. The largest male suddenly killed one of the males. He also beat up the third male who lost his color and now looks like a female.

The dominant male then spawned with a female Texas cichlid. The dominated male has spawned twice with a female Ornatum and it appears the female is still guarding what should be wriggled now.

The males are much longer and deeper bodied now and the dominant male has a lot of red in his fins. The breeding female looks very different from non breeding females with a lot of black on stomach and vertical bars.

I was told Ornatum take four plus years to reach breeding age and mine are just at four year make now. I will get pictures of them as soon as possible.
