I have a 10 in armatus in a heavily stocked 265 gal tank of: lg arowanna, 6 dats, 5 black bar SD, ray, 4 red tail tats, RCK, bichir, TSN, P bass, tarpon, frontosa, FL gar.

I strongly suspect my armatus is responsible for the growing number of puncture/slash eye injuries to several tank mates.

I notice larger armatus are ususally kept with just a few tankmates. Here is my question to those with experience keeping larger armatus.

Do you think removing most of the fish giving the armatus more territory decrease his aggression towards the remaining tank mates?

Appreciate your thoughts!

I had ten 6" armatus along with ten red parrots as dithers in a 260g. As the armatus all got to 10" they started to shank each other. Aggression grow and start to kill each other. Sadly, as I started losing them one by one, I figure I should thin them out. With less fish and more room they turned into glass bangers. If you don't know already when this happens they go into a death spin (lost balance). I got a freezer full of fish now.
If I had to do it over they should be keep in a 600g +. A lot of people have them in big tanks with no problem. gl

It might or might not help.Mine is in with two cichla, one bigger and one smaller. The Armatus started off bullying and snapping at the smaller bass then it began to chase the bass for short distances and now it snaps at the bigger bass. So far the bigger bass does not seem to show any fear towards the Armatus.I suspect someone is going to have to be relocated in the near future.

You have 4 Tat.. They could do the slashing, too, not just the Armatus only. You could keep your Armatus with your arowana (if arowana is biggger), dats, ray, bichir, TSN, pbass (same size or bigger), and may be gar... Other fish like SD, Tat, RCK, tarpon, frontosa may not last long with Armatus, either lose eye or get killed. BTW, to answer your question, giving your Armatus more room won't decrease his aggression toward the tank mates. You just give the tank mates more room to avoid the Armatus, and give the Armatus more room to build its speed. You may want to lower your water level, so it won't hit his head on the lid.

Yikes! That would disturb me to no end, a tank full of monster 1 eyed pirates - save what you can, sounds like the Aramatus is gonna take all 265 gal. for itself.
