i think i found the reason exodons never have offspring. i don't think its the fact that they DON'T mate, but when releasing eggs, they eat them all as they fall. and your probably never around to even notice since they are extremely fast at both noticing and eating oddities in the tank (including their own eggs).

but an idea popped into my head...

this is a drawing of what im talking about. it basically show the tank with a strong current blowing from the exo side to the other side of the tank and a wide-hole screen between them. check it out.

well, you could make the substrate marbles and the eggs can fall in between. either way works.

i like the little mushroom at the bottom of the tank lol.
lol! It does look like a small mushroom...

Seems like it would work, try it. Another idea is to put some kind of mesh/eggcrate like 3 inches from the bottom so when they lay eggs they will fall to the bottom. The fish won't be able to get to them, but if their eating them before they fall then it might not work, lol. TRY IT!

the thing about marbles is that the exodons eat all the eggs before they have a chance to touch bottom.

im doing some research now and contacting my capoeira friends who will be going to brazil later this year to see if they can observe for me. if exodons live in fast moving water then that would explain their survival all together. but i just need to confirm this since i haven't found that as a clear answer in any webpage. all we know is that they congregate near drainage areas which vaguely suggests it.

before i commence this experiment, im going to install a test powerhead into my tank and drop in some flake foods. usually with a pinch of flakes dropped into the filter output (so that they get released under water), the exos never let a single flake go uneaten or get sucked into the filter. (their THAT fast). the theory is if i can get a good amount of flake food to bypass the exodons and make it to the far end of glass, it will be deemed plausible and i will pick up a 30gal breeder to start my experiment with.

i dont know if this would work but it works for guppies. i bought it at petco but couldnt find the link so i made this terrible, terrible drawing...i dont know much about exodons but if your able to find a pregnant female you can put her alone in the chamber. Then an airline hooks to the chamber and blows bubbles into the top of the water creating a downward current which helps to push the eggs down. guppies were live bearers so i dont know if it will work for eggs also. just my idea though, i figured id throw it out there...
