Since joining ]v[FK a world of rare and uncommon fish was opened up to me . I learned about fish I had never heard about and gained loads of information. I also gained access to vendors and the joys of being able to source almost any fish I could want if I was willing to pay a little extra for shipping.

Now for the question, I've got to ask has anyone else noticed a sudden huge increase in differences in shipping prices between vendors? In the past I was able to order small boxes of fish for about $50 to $80 for overnight guaranteed by 10:30 am by both Fed Ex and UPS. Now all of a sudden some vendors are charging $160 to ship and others are still charging $50-$80. Perfect example recently dealing with 2 vendors both in San Jose Cali, asking for a quote for the same day for a 11-12 pound package and both according to the quotes sharing equal dimensions yet one vendor quoted me at $60 and another $150 for the shipping using the same shipping companies and same guaranteed by 10:30am delivery.

Now I'm not trying to say certain vendors are ripping anyone off with shipping, I'm just curious if only I've been subject to this phenomenon. Some of those vendors told me that they believe the discrepancy is because the other vendor may have an account with said shipping companies. Now I'm willing to consider that possibility, but it's kind of hard for me to understand almost a $100 difference for vendors sharing the same zip code even with the excuse of having an account. I would think that a $20-$30 difference might be understandable, but almost a $100 is kind of ridiculous.

So that being said I'd like to hear from you guys, have any of you guys experienced this phenomenon recently? What do you think about it? Since even the vendors I asked about such discrepancies didn't have a reason, do you guys have a logical reason you think there is for the differences? Also vendors if you come across this thread and can lend some info. for such differences could you educate me as to why they exist? I'd greatly appreciate any help I could get understanding this. I imagine that some vendors wouldn't know but I also imagine that perhaps more experienced vendors might know why the difference exists. I always thought such discrepancies would be caused by a variety of things including whether the vendor has an account or not with a shipping company, box size and weight origin of packages and there destination yet from the small amount of investigation I did this doesn't seem to be the case. So what is the determining factors that dictate the price differences?

Meh, 24 hour bump(approx.). Figured I'd move it up and see if anybody has experienced the same thing I have mentioned above and if they had anything beneficial to add. If not it's cool I'll let the thread die, just thought it was a subject many of us would be interested especially since times are tough and these differences in shipping costs can really hurt us getting some of the fish we as a community might want. I know it's stopped me from buying some fish as I personally can't afford $150 dollars or more to buy a single 3 inch fish especially when I'm used to getting 4 fish of similar size delivered for anywhere between $50-$65.

While I have noticed a difference in shipping rates between vendors, there is a lot of factors that would cause prices to be different.

* Carrier
* Location
* Package size
* Package weight
* Gas prices
* Unspecified hangling fees
* etc

All of which can effect prices. I personally wish some vendors gave you more options, I find it hard to justify spending $100+ on shipping when you are spending $50 on fish. When I order on the western side of the country, I can usually get overnight shipping through USPS for under $40 and under $70 for eastern side. Fedex has screwed me over twice, UPS 4 times (for non fish related shipments), and never had an issue with USPS. Its cheaper and for me at least gets the job done.

My buddy paid 1000 for shipping on 4 fish, after hearing that i'll never complain about shipping cost again

Smallest one had a 16 inch disk, largest was over 24 and all 4 were in seperate boxes
