MCE - how large is your argentea?

I plan on just keeping them in my community tank. It'd be nice to breed them but I've heard they can be very difficult.

I am keeping one male in a community tank. Growth rate has been slow to medium. Purchased @ 5" and is now ~11" after about a year and a half. Has gone from the bottom fish to the top without so much as splitting a fin. I have seen very little overt aggression. My female cuban has been trying to pair with him but he will not have it. One of my favorite fish.

I picked up a small group but unfortunately they look stunted. Their eyes are huge and this seller has been selling 1" argentea's since the last few swaps.

Hopefully I can get their growth back on track but if I end up with "mini" argentea's I wont mind.

The large eyes are normal in young argentea fry. And if the seller has fry at different swaps, it's because he has a mated pair that regularly spawn. With care, your argentea should grow normally, and look like mini adults very soon.

I hope you have a large tank, at about 4" they start to become very aggressive, first among themselves then with any other high bodied cichlid that looks similar.

I thought they were stunted because their eyes are just as big if not a tad bigger than some juvenile synspilum that are atleast twice their size.

Thanks for the heads up. Ill be watching them closely once they get around that size.

I got mine at 1/2-1in. Darn thing grows slow, bought same time as my festae and synspillum 6-8 months ago. 1 Red terror is at 6-7 and 2 synspillum is at 5-6. 2 Argentea is only 2.5-maybe 3 but nobody touches them. The smallest in the tank filled with 30 5-7in fish. Never seen a single nip on them.
