Okay! Well!
Here is what I intend to build (see image below)... I want to achieve approximately 50gph i.e. one circulation of the tank per hour... that sound about right? ... may have to be higher/lower due to the fact the pipe sizes available may vary.

Once I have the overflow designed I will start looking at the size / construction of the actual sub tank.

Oh and just to add the overflow inlet will be 2inches below the water.. will that be enough?

depending on the flowrate of your pipe (inside diameter) and whether or not you use a ball valve downstream in the overflow pipe, your water level may drop to the level of the inlet, best to mock it up and see what works before sealing anything.
