Extermal pump problem...Help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i think the reason why they say not to have a 90 on the intake of the pump is because as the water flows around the bend, turbulence is caused. when these turbulent waters enter the pump the water doesnt flow as efficiantly through the housing causing more turbulence and lowering your flow. for that to happen the 90 would need to be installed right before going into the pump. if a union ballvalve is installed before the pump, that should be long enough to restore the laminar flow through the pipe into the pump.

So safe to say I may be able to get away plumbing like the picture I posted due to it has some length of pipe after the elbow before it enters the pump.

The hammerhead has a 1 1/2" inlet so would coming off the tank with 2" pipe,2" elbow and then 2" ball valve then reduce into the 1 1/2" connector going into the hammerhead inlet help with flow going into the pump? I have been doing some image searching and it appears quite a few people use a 90 degree elbows off the sump before going into the pumps inlet.
