5-8x/hr I've heard is what you want when using a wet/dry I'm not sure how accurate that is though. Very little in fish keeping is certain, 3x would deffinatly save energy and pump costs, might be worth a shot unless ya stock heavy or plan to.

Off topic here, but has anyone noticed smaller tanks need higher turn over rates then say 240+ gallon tanks?

I'm only planing on keeping a large Arowana but I want to buy a pump large enough for a saltwater reef tank if I change my mind later. If I do go with salt later I know I will need alot of flow.

Thanks
Brad

Aro's can't handle alot of flow, they do a little better as they age, but not well enough.

I say buy a smaller one now, and when you do get a saltwater, use the small pump for a closed loop system or a skimmer if it flows enough.

Nice choice on fish btw.
An aro is my dream fish, I'm selling my car for a tank to house a black. :)

I have a 96"x36"x36" and I have a Dolphin Ampmaster 3000 with 2" inlet and outlet. I believe it does about 3Kgph with the head restriction of my setup. It's quiet too.

I am getting a tank that is 96x30x42 with a center trap and my wet/dry is going to be
60x24x18. I am not really sure how big of a pump I am going to need. The guy making it says I should run a 1/2HP Tunze Wavemaster but I can't find one online any where. Also I think that is to big and it will use way to much electricty. I have been looking at the Sequence Reeflo pumps but I'm not to sure how good of a brand they are. So could someone give my a recommendationon what the size pump I would need, the best brand and most energy efficient.

Thanks
Brad

I did this for you

I put it in a separate thread so I can find it later. Take note that the example I used is your tank ;)

:D I used your wet/dry dimensions. That is a big wet/dry. Can't wait to see the tank.

Your tank size is 509.7 gallons.
Five turnovers is 2548.3 gallons per hour, or 42.5 gallons per minute.
At five feet of head using the same chart, nothing on the face of the earth will help you...But don't worry, I can find another. Brb...

It would be helpful for everyone to know where I got these charts. They come from the manufacturer but they are nicely arranged with each pump line at:

http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/listings.subsections/sid/26

On each pump line page, under the picture, click the link that says "click for more pictures". Not very descriptive, I know, but once you know what is where it is easy to find them.

This first one is for Little Giant
7679

This one is for Artesian Water Pumps
7709

Wave Pond Pumps
7689

When a pump curve is way over your specs, don't try to make it work. If it is close you can shunt extra water off back to the wet/dry using a tee and ball valve. The pump curve still needs to be close to your requirements.

Thanks for all the info Chompers. I was deciding between the Wave1 1/4hp or the Sequence Reeflo Hammerhead. I think I am going to go with the Sequence just because it is alot cheaper.
Thanks Again

Sequence makes really great pumps. They are very popular with reef keepers and pond people all over the US. I have a couple of them myself, and prefer them over Iwaki having used both.
