External Sump pump with out drilling?

Well, assuming I get your description correctly, you could drill the tank, use the external pump (placed on the same platform as the sump), and just use a pvc union above the pump. That way, you simply disconnect the union, and pull out the platform as usual. Then when you push it back in, make sure the pvc lines up, reattach the union, and your good to go.

I think you'd have to do that either way you go, whether you use a submersible or external pump.

hmm, ya I just don't know anybody that would drill it and I am to afraid to try it. It is a really old tank. and it has a hikari logo on it. And never seen that before. It was a old pet store tank. But I don't know if it is tempered or not.

Well, there's one way to find out ;).

If you're not sure about it being tempered or not, I wouldn't drill it unless you're ok with possibly having to buy a new tank/sump if it breaks.

Go to glass-holes.com and check out their instruction video's for cutting holes in glass. Very informative, and its much easier than you'd think it would be. If you still don't want to try it, I'd go with a submersible pump. That will be much easier to deal with than having to worry about an external pump pulling water up over the side of the sump (IMO).

ok sounds good. One more question, If i was to try to drill it my self wouldnt i have to buy the bit and a drill that can spin at very low rpms?

You would have to buy the bit. You would need a drill with adjustable torque/rpm. I think most battery powered drills are adjustable. If you have a corded one, you can still use it, just be extremely careful.

Some glass places will drill for you. My local one does it for $20 or 25, and they don't guarantee they won't break the tank.

They broke my tank (because it was a 10 gallon and had 1/8" glass) so I went and got another one and it went fine, they knocked $10 off the price because they broke it. They said it was the first tank they had broken, because drilling thin glass is harder than drilling thick glass.
