What media do you guy's use in the extra cartridge in your emp. 400's, I was thinking about using Eheim Ehfimech ( hollow ceramic small cylinders). I've had luck with this type of media in other filters and like it a lot. Plus it don't clog up very fast and a simple slow swish in tank water every, whenever needed, cleans it out real good.

I use swamp cooler filter pad in the trays... And pot scrubbers behind them :) Nothing else

Ceramic cylinders or lava granules. Both are excellent.

eheims efhi substrat pro in the 2 grey cartridges closes to the bio wheels!!!! my water is always crystal clear!!!!:)

I think that's a good idea, I use ehfimech as the first layer in all my canisters. Never thouht of putting it in the EMP 400. It could prolong the life of the filter cartridge.

Use substrat pro not efhimech as the design aids in increased waterflow!! Also the smaller size makes it easier to fit in the right amount into the grey cartridge!!:) ......make sure you rinse them though!!!

I don't think it would prolong the life of the filter cartridge, cause it should be placed after the filter before the bio-wheel. I'm just tryin to decide what media will add the most bb to the system altogether.

Where can I pick this up at. and how much. I usually order out of Dr. foster and smith, and they don't carry this. the Eheim Ehfimech is $30 for 10lbs. but do you think those are to big for the grey cartridges? They also carry atleast 2 other ceramic cylinders, one advertises 3/8" by 3/8".

I filled 4 grey cartridges (2 emp 400's) with i believe the 1 litre box.......hell for 21 bucks it's a steal and will last pretty much forever!!!.......heck get the 2 liter box and have extra on hand for futur tanks......

good luck............p.s. i have looked into this stuff and now have used it for some time and recommend it!!!

I use supercartrages in all of our emp's... they replace both the stock cartrage and the media basket with a single unit that contains bio-serface area and has two cleanable pads in the center. IMO this is the best way to increase the bio capacity of emp's as well as bieng very economical. You can pick them up on E bay.
