i use biomax cylinders in mine you can fit almost a whole box in one filter if you spend the time to arrange them.

Sorry we are on different thought paths here. Ehfimech is not intended to grow colonies of BB on. It is designed to trap larger particle of debree, so that it does not clog up the finer media in your filter. For what you are trying to do you would want togo with ehfisubtrat or ehfisubstrat pro.
Should be able to find ceramic cylinders or lava granules at many lfs's. They don't clog very quickly either. I would rinse mine off maybe once a year in tank water just to get a little of the gunk out, but it never clogs. As long as you don't leave the filter pad in after it's clogged and water's flowing over the top, the media shouldn't clog up at all.
