Hi all, yesterday I purchased my first Bichir, a 15cm Senegalus. When I introduced it to the tank, it would hide under the rockwork for a bit, swim around the tank, hide, swim around etc. Today, it has been really active, swimming all over the tank (5'x2'x2'), its head constantly skimming the surface and even taking gulps of air. Does it sound normal that it is this active? It just came as a bit of a surprise, as most of the Bichirs that I have seen in shops are lazy, and barely move at all.

This is normal healthy behavior for senegalus bichirs. Bichirs need to breath air so be sure to leave about 1-2" of air at the top of the tank for your bichir to go up for air. Most bichirs are lazy and spend all day laying lazy on the bottom. If you like active bichirs then I suggest senegalus, delhezi, polli palmas. Personally, I only like these few species due to their high activity level.

Congrats on getting your first Bichir:) now you have to start saving for your next one hehehe.

When I first got me Senegal it didnt do much but a day or two later it acclimatised and it now doesnt stop swimming.

I wish my senegal would go back to this behaviour. Mine was just the opposite, active at first, then when it got some size to it, it started hiding more.

Both my senegals, regular and albino long finned, are extremely active. The swim, float and cruise all about the tank. They never seem to hide. My retro is still pretty new and as for now he just pretty much lies around on the bottom.

mine enjoys shooting up to the surface, then curling in a fetal position and sinking back to the bottom. He also like to sit on top of my other bichirs

I've seenthem floating around in a semi curled position sometimes. Looks like they are watching me as they slowly drift by.

yeah my retro doesn't have half the personality that my sens do. perhaps he is still acclimating but i swear both my senegals were little hams from day one.

senegals are IMO the best, followed by delhezi. I just keep lower jawed cause they look good, but they are BORING otherwise
