nothing major
i did about a 30% water change

about 2 weeks ago i lost power for about 48 hours, and my 180 has been extremely cloudy ever since (can barely see to the back of the tank)
i should have enough filtration, because it wasn't bad before the outage. it wasn't crystal clear, but it was good, and that was before i added my wet/dry (which i thought would make my water perfect).
i added the wet/dry about 5 days before we lost power so it didn't get much of a chance to establish anything

but i don't understand why my water got all cloudy? and what can i do to fix it?
i don't want to do large water changes, and risk recycling the tank? (its happened to me before, NOT FUN!)

anyhow, i currently have a 70g HOB, a eheim 2217 (although its not moving very much water lately) and a 30g sump, with 5g of bioballs in the trickle, and a 900g/h pump

whats my problem, and how can i fix it without risking my fish?

Ok, to sum things up...

10 Bacteria start to die after 20 minutes so there isn't much hope for the old bacteria.

2) You don't cycle the tank you cycle the filter... so water changes aren't going to be detrimental as long as the water is treat and temp matched.

3) Did you clean the filters writer after the power outage and before turning the filters back on or the filters came back on w/o cleaning and flushed the dead bacteria and anaerobic water back into the system?

4) Bacteria should have started growing back by now, so drain some tank water off and gently clean everything thing in it (filter materials).

The low water quality will clear up with W/Cs and as the filter matures.

Post the water chemistry.

the canister was not cleaned.
the HOBs were cleaned and then turned back on once the power returned.
the wet dry just sat there, then turned back on

i did a w/c earlier ... how long should i wait before i should test it ?

Before you did the W/C, but that boat has sailed:ROFL:, so now is fine and again in the morning.

before the w/c my ammonia was high, that was the only thing i checked (i though of it after i had already done the w/c, but i still had some original tankwater in a bucket)
i think i was about 2.0ppm

Yes, you definitely need to test ammonia/nitrites/nitrates 1st. Otherwise there's no way to know how to deal with whatever it is you're dealing with. When it doubt-always test.
Edit: Sorry, didn't see the most recent post. 2 ppm ammonia is high. A 30% water change will only knock it down to about 1.5 ppm.

the water change was about 30% and i did it about 2 hours ago
tested 5 min ago
ammonia: 2.0
nitrate: 15
nitrite: .25
pH: 6.6

and now is when i start to panic, b/c anytime i see nitrites, i freak out, cuz thats how i lost my sturgeon ...
so what can i do to fix the tank asap ?

My opinion? I'd do another water change, at least 50%. And 1 or possibly 2 more tomorrow of 50%. I've got well water with no chlorine but the undissolved CO2 is high. I feel safe doing up to 65% water change with straight tap and do that much twice a week like clockwork on my Oscar tanks. All they do is thrive with it.
So unless you've got unsafe tapwater or something weird like that? I'd get to draining about 50% and filling. That's just my take on it. You know your fish and your water better than we do.

i have city water, so i dechlor every drop that comes out
i just want my tanks to look better ... i have 5 tanks running, and they are never crystal clear. the fish are healthy, and the water isnt bad, its just not show quality (the 180 is worse now than it has ever been. this time around i was worrying about the power loss, so i let it go a little longer than normal, and i probably overfeed that tank a little because its my MONSTERS :))

... i am just afraid of doing too many and or too big of w/c because of whats happened to me in the past, and losing a tankful of fish...
if several people agree that i need to be doing larger changes and or more often i will give it a shot for sure

water changes can only help if you do them correctly, if you dont do the water changes as many others have suggested, it will never get any better, just do it!!
