Good evening everyone,

I’ve recently found myself wanting to set up a tank for the first time in a few years. Although now that my living situation is changed the max I could set up would be about a 40B. I have an FX5 & 2 AQ110s, could I potentially add them all to the 40B and just add sponges/spray bars to not create a whirlpool?

On a side note, I do not know what I want yet as far as stocking.

Thank you for your time!

I would say depending on the stock that is sufficient. I’ve ran a identical set up on my bass grow out fx-5 and 2 ac110 40g breeder as well. I’d leave the fx5 nossle pointing up for o2 exchange.

Should be fine. Though, I wouldn't bother with the AQ110s, the FX5 would be more than enough filtration and all the AQs would be adding is noise and complexity.

I wouldn't call it complexity. I'd call it redundancy. If an impeller or motor goes, at least you have a back up. Two is one and one is none. Plus, you can always move an established filter over to another tank should he get the "bug" again lol.

I don't believe anyone can ever over filter a tank.
That said, you can have too much water movement for certain fish.
If you decide you want fish from fast moving streams, or counter current zones, that are heavily oxygenated such as hill stream loaches, tidal zone goby cichlids of the rift lakes, of Central American species such as Rheoheros, Chuco, or Tomocichla then heavy water movement isn't a problem. I have kept some rheophillic species, where getting enough water flow, is a problem.

If however you chose swamp dwellers like your average Anabantids, or oxbow fish like discus or angels, heavy flow would be stressful .
So until you decide which species you want, the question may be moot.

If you have a quality filter they basically never fail, The only ones I've ever had issues with are Fluval 404s, everything else has been 100% reliable over the last 18 years. If it does you can grab one of the replacements out of the closet and move the media into it. And if you want to set up a new tank just take some of the media from it. There's nothing to gain from the extra two filters other than a little redundancy, but in my experience AC110s are just noisy and messy.

I took a look at the gobies, says they’re very aggressive with their own species? So a small community in a 40 wouldn’t work?

Anything with moving parts is capable of failing, especially in today's throw away world of low quality parts. And grabbing a replacement out of the closet only works if one is home to grab one out of the closet. lol

In this hobby redundancy is always good thing. I have a back up for my back ups.
