This is your lucky Day. I currently keep two Target Fish and I have kept and Bred Belonesox Belizanus!
Target fish info from my experience is that they are terrors of the tank. Mine are in with Scats and FW Moray Eels and Columbian Sharks at salinities ranging from 1.010 to 1.019. They can live in lower and greater salinities but I've had the most success in this range. I have two and I'm guessing three or more would help diffuse some of the agression the dominant fish shows toward the other. They constantly move and are scale nippers! Different from fin nippers in that, if they are not satiated they scrape the scales off of the other fish. (My poor silver scats were naked at one point.) They are not great for community tanks and should not be kept with fish 1/2 their size as their mouths are deceivingly LARGE! In an attempt to entice my eels to start eating again, I purchased live LARGE goldfish. To my amazement one was gulped down by a target fish! It was about 1/3 the size of the fish.
Overall, they are great fish that eat everything from worms to crayfish to pellets to shrimp or anything that looks like it could have once been meat.
Belonesox Belizanus: Unless you are prepared to keep and raise live foods STAY AWAY FROM THIS FISH! They too are brackish but much more sensitive to changes to their water quality, unlike the Scats who appreciate change. They only eat live fish. THEY ONLY EAT LIVE FISH! Did I mention, THEY ONLY EAT LIVE FISH!!!! Keep them on the low end of the salinity range 1.003 - 1.008 and you'll have happy fish! They are scary and so they need lots of dark places to hide. A planted aquarium would be the IDEAL tank loaded with guppies and mollies and their natural prey platys.
Like other livebearers keep 1 male per 3 females. Though they seem to be much more intelligent in that they don't seem to harass a female once she's pregnant. I SAID SEEMS that way! They give birth at night and those little guys eat baby guppies and will try eating adult guppies right away. You will EASILY tell a pregnant female because she'll look like she's about to explode.
Feeding is the hardest thing about these fish. If there's an active fish in the tank with them, they will NOT chase the feeders. If you scare the fish, they will NOT chase the feeders. If you go broke buying feeders they will NOT chase the feeders. (OMG) If a feeder dies in the tank they will NOT eat the feeder! They too can eat goldfish, but goldfish suck overall, buy them and feed them to your fish at your own risk. Guppies are the best, but an adult female can eat over 30 at one sitting. And they'll gladly eat twice a day.
Otherwise, I quite enjoyed seeing the babies (none survived because they are even MORE sensitive than the parents and need OLD CLEAN consistent water.
I can talk all day about these fish. My Target fish are now 5" and 4". My belonesox are dead. But in the future I'll get them again when they show in the store. Like others said, your local store may be able to get them since they are wild in Florida and are common in the trade, just not that well saught after and usually come with a heafty price tag. I paid about 20.00 for each but talked my guy into getting 3 for 40.
Last thing, BB's don't need a large tank. But Target fish swim non-stop and a tank 6' in length would be a good start for them.
I have a vid when they were small
