I guess there are multiple reasons, most guys like pure species, it took a while for flowerhorns to be popular, it would be hard to get trend going on for new species, so no one is motivated to put hard work needed to make such a hybrid. African cichlid hybrids are coming out now.
Yeah I've notice a few hybrid Africans that were nice but it doesn't seem like allot of effort being put into it either. If I had more tanks and space I'd try my hand in it since it seems cross breeding haps together is allot simpler then most SA and CA cichlids are.

I assume most malawi peacocks are closely related. That makes them easier to breed and I assume without deformities.

I always knew blood parrots were hybrids, but deformities and apperence were result of selective breeding but from the other thread here, I was wrong. By seeing how short lived flowerhorn are through line breeding, I don't think/feel like mixing species that are very different is a good idea. Mixing among Amphilophus should be alright I assume, I wouldn't mind a midas and trimac only mix, get pearls and markings of trimac on gold color of midas, by selective breeding but without or limited inbreeding. May be adding a wild fish every or every other generations. Just speculations though.

Yeah I'd agree that allot of the African lake cichlids are very closely related to eachother and probably hybridize regularly in their native habitats. With SA and CA cichlids tho there happens to be allot of barrier between different species and I think this is what causes most of them to be incompatible with eachother. They may all have originated from a dozen or so species but they have diversified so greatly that allot of them can no longer cross breed. Granted I have seen some weird and wacky SA & CA hybrids tho. Allot of em consist of convict hybrids or salvini hybrids. Seen a Texas and Jaguar cichlids hybrid once and it honestly was pretty good looking, had the nice slim figure of the Jaguar while keeping the blue pearling from the Texas. Granted the likely hood of recreating that hybrid is pretty slim just due to the major difference in appearances between the 2 fish.
