I test if setting up something new or the few times I have mixed salt solutions. That is about it unless something starts going wrong.I once had a unexplained gray water outbreak and tested high on ammonia in a 55g so I flushed the ugf by running a power head down the uplift tube and found a dead 10" peacock eel that had been "eaten" several months before. When it disappeared it was only around 7"
 
It may have been able to survuve under the UGF, but as time went on lack of food, light or clean water(being so close to all the muck that collects there) caused its death....

Bacteria started to feed on it, but this is a corpse we're talking about not uneaten food or faeces...The an ammonia spike was natural to occur...
