Jim, how has the weather been by you the last few days, and heavy rains? If so, there is a very good chance that your tap water parameters have changed, whether you are on city water or on a well. I lost a beautiful BD due to that exact reason, I did a big water change not knowing the tap water was different than normal and it sent her into shock. I now test my tap water before every change.

Hi doyboy. It's weird i know. I run a auto drip that comes on for two 3 hour periods a day. I am annoyed becoause i am only going to be able to keep the tank at the same nitrate reading as is coming out of my tap and that is too high at around 40 parts per million according to the test kit. I have emailed Portsmouth water to see if they can shed any light on it. Maybe got something to do with the hot weather? But did not notice this last year at summer time.
I no jim we r a good distance apart but iv had exact same on my water last week, first female stopped eating over night which I thought was due to him hassling her but next day male stopped, checked water and mine was like yours nites had shot up which was odd as I had done big wc night before, over the next fews days I did lots of smaller wc plus prime every time, took 4-5 days but water is back on track spot on and the rays are smashing the food again. Im not sure weather the heat could mess with the water coming from the local water company (heat resulting in less oxygen) im not sure. Hope yours is back on track soon

Just got off the phone to Portsmouth water, they are going to test but say there is no change their end? I told them i have seen it as low as 20 parts but is now 40 to 60 parts per mil coming out of the tap. They told me it has not been as low as 20 parts since 2012 and they are allowed to go upto 60 parts per mil! Great! Not sure what to do next. I guess if the water has been like this before now then it is not this causing the 2 out of 5 rays not to eat. I will get a new test kit this week end and test again. Can a aquarium actulally show nitrate readings lower than what is coming out of your tap? I don't run any nitrate filter or have any plants so would not imagine the water in the tank could be lower than the tap water, but i know for a fact i have had much lower nitrates than i have now in the tank, but i have not tested the tap water for a long time.

Was going to say surely if its not been as low as 20 since 2012 then it shouldn't be that unless the water that u have had dripping has had a big spike on one day recently and this has upset the balance ????. I had not ever really tested my water from the tap but I should of. Same as me yours r big strong rays so thankfully gives u time to turn them around. Id keep up with wc and maybe cut back on the feeding of the other rays for a few days. Its a strange one.

I tested water from a tap in the kitchen not from the drip. Done the same thing today plus the tank water. Still just as bad so I wonder now if the test kit is crap. Doing my head in all this. Still one good thing, the worms were delivered today all 5 rays lapped them up so at least I know the 2 that have,nt been eating are ok at least. Did not feed too many. Will cut back on feeding for a couple of days and buy a new test kit tomorrow.

Well I bought a new kit. Instead of the bottle type tests I bought the drip strip type. This shows tank at around 20 to 30. I don't really know what's gone on. I haven't had time to play with the kits or test the tap water. But I am happy for now. Something's changed. The female Bd started eating frozen again and so did the male. I removed the divider this afternoon and all rays eating. Happy days. Although the female Pearl giving the beat up Bd a hard time. She has healed quickly in a couple of days but will have to keep a close eye on her and separate again if things get rough.
