F0, F1, F2?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its a bit cleared up now! So its basically names for generations?

Now what im stuck on is,

F0xF0... would that be a F1?

another,

F1xF3... F#? lol

IF the two F0's are kept in a tank, then their offspring would be F1 or First Generation Captive Bred (CB) since the fry would have been born in a fishtank and not the wild... so basically speaking only wild caught fish can be labeled as F0

For the F1 X F3 part... will have to wait for some one else to chime in for a more accurate explanation of what that will come out as...

^ You know, i was just thinking that as well...

But i have a feeling they would consider it an F2 probably? since normally you need two wild caught parents to breed and produce fry in order for the Fry to be considered F1's...

So even an F0 breeding with an F1 i'm guessing leads to an F2 and not another F1?

although would love to hear other members thoughts on this as well since i'm honestly not 100% sure...

Agreed. I have a wc and an F1 spawning, but wouldn't consider thinking the fry are anything but
F2

Unless I'm wrong..... Which happens alot lol.

Just label it as F1xF3. You likely wouldn't even run it to that situation, you never even see F3 listed. Very rarely will you even see F2. Most people just won't list it at that point.

The fish-keeping world seems to have adopted the F# system for describing fry from wild parents, where as generally speaking it is used to describe the first or second or whatever generation from a certain cross. If you cross any two fish you could call the offspring of that cross "F1" and technically you would be correct. (the definition is here; http://www.biology-online.org/dictionary/Filial_generation).

However, the aquarium hobby usually only uses it for wild caught or first (sometimes second) generation captive bred stock. As above, F1xF3 would usually just be called "fry"...

Yes, that would be correct, but people would not be happy finding their "F1" fry came from F500xF197 parents. It has sort of taken on its own definition in the fishkeeping hobby in that regard.

Just call them F1 X F3... or just the collection location.

I think there's also a misconception that the higher the F# that the "less pure" or "worse quality" the fish are. Actually it can be just the opposite, especially if breeders are selecting for desired traits (e.g. color, size, etc.)...

Like I posted before, don't overthing the F# thing. Focus on provenance to wild fish / collection location.

Correct - it's been bastardized in the cichlid hobby especially.

In the parts of the hobby that develop fancy fish, however, it tends to be used appropriately.

This is the filial scale. The generation of a fish bred from wild caught (F0). When breeding anything on the filial scale that set of offspring will go to the next consecutive F# as the highest parent. F0xF1 gets you F2 fry.
