F1 lyonsi spawn.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just got home from my sons 5th grade graduation, and I have eggs again. The male seems to have taken a likeing to another female from this group of 3 that I have. I will be more proactive and pull half the fry as soon as they hatch, and let the parents try and raise the second half. Here is a video. Sorry about the glare, I useually wait until its dark outside to make videos, but dident want to miss the spawning action. Enjoy.

So, just an update, of the original 4 that I was able to save, 3 are still alive in the 20 gallon. They are free swimming and are out and about grazing and what not. My eggs from the second spawn hatched today, and I pulled about 100 wigglers. They are also in the 20. The original 3 are older by only 8 days and have been free swimming for only 3 so there shouldn't be any issues with them eating the new batch. I left probably 100 fry with the parents. I hope the parents learn how to parent, and I won't have to pull fry next time. But if I have to, I will. I will make a video in a few days, and continue to update. Thanks for following along.

This is the second or third time I have pulled fry to raise them, I useually just keep them with the parents until they are a month or two old. And then I useually only pull about 20ish, so I'm able to raise them to a sellable/tradeable/giveawayable size. Useually the 20 gallon is fine for a few months and then I have to put them in a 4' 55 gallon tank for a few months. With this group because of their endangerd status, I wanted to raise out more then the useual 20 or so. I have never shipped fish, and I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to get rid of all 100 or so around here. So, a few questions. #1 what size is the best size to ship fry? #2 ya think these guys are going to need a 6' tank to reach a decent enough size to ship/trade off/sell? And #3 is there anyone that would be intrested in these guys in the pacific nw?

I have a shop that I'm sure will be getting about 30 or so of them as soon as they reach 1-1 1/2", but I want to get them to hobbiests as well. Any suggestions, ideas, experiances with this situation would be appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance.

Those are some nice looking Lyonsi! Keep up the good work. Currently looking for some F1 myself.

Hi'

Congrats :) What temp is your water at and how big are the lyonsi? Any easy way to sex them? Hoping to get a pair out of the 4 i have (4-6 inch maybe a bit bigger). I had a look for a biotope a few months back but couldn't find much. I've had mine since they were about an inch and a half

Very nice! Congrats! I would love to have some of these guys someday. Like the others have said it's great that you are keeping/spawning these guys and spreading them around! All of my tanks are being used for uncommon/rare/and threatened CA cichlids and livebearers. I don't keep anything common at all. It's very important that more and more people keep these fish to help save them. I just got 6 bartoni fry and I am very excited! The other cichlid I have is F2 Neets "Lago Nicaragua". Waiting for pairs to form! Congrats again!

Wow cant believe I missed this. Great to hear the fish are doing so well! We have missed you on the local forums.... hint, hint.

Im digging up an old thread and pointing anyone intrested in these fry to the for sale section. In the last few months I have gotten my feet wet shipping fish, and I have fry that are ready to go. So if your intrested in fry, and you are in the continental usa check out the clasifieds, i will ship.
